National Cupcake Day
December 15th is National Cupcake Day
As far as we can discover, cupcakes date back to the 1700s. Back then they were more like what are known as English Fairy Cakes today.
Fairy cakes are different than cupcakes in that they tend to be smaller and the icing is drizzled on them in smaller amounts. By comparison, cupcakes tend to be piled high with buttercream frostings.
Hostess was the first to start mass producing cupcakes, back in 1919. And apparently we have Winston Churchill to thank for the idea that cupcakes should be frosted. Prior to that they were apparently made using dried fruits ranter than frosted.
Of course the thing to do on National Cupcake Day is to bake cupcakes, or go to a bakery and get one.
