detox xmoothie

This is an easy to make high fiber, high protein, detox smoothie with no artificial ingredients at all, not even a scoop of protein powder!

A lot of thought went into the creation of this detox smoothie.  Quinoa is a high source of protein and is the only complete plant based protein you can find.  A cup of quinoa supplies 17% of your daily protein needs.  Quinoa is also an excellent source of quercetin which has been found to help stop the spread of lung and other cancers.  A third to a half a cup of quinoa will do your body a lot more good than any protein powder and at a much lower price!  Read more about the health benefits of quinoa here.  Quinoa is one of many nutrition boosters I try to add to my smoothies.

All of the ingredients are detox foods, especially the celery, spinach and arugula.  But the arugula is the superstar here.  Arugula is one of the most nutrient dense foods you can eat and it’s praised for its detox qualities, particularly liver detox.  And if your liver is toxic it can’t do it’s job meaning more and more toxins will pile up in your body.

This is not a sweet smoothie.  The Arugula gives it a peppery taste, but the apple, banana and honey counter it.  If you want a sweeter smoothie try using two apples instead of the banana.

Most smoothie recipes I’ve seen using quinoa in them recommend cooking or softening the quinoa overnight.  I’ve found that when I use the NutriBullet I don’t really need to do so. It does leave it with a bit of a grainy texture, so you might want to try putting the quinoa in the mixing cup with some water to soften overnight if you want it smoother.

If you’re not using a NutriBullet or other high power blender, then cut your celery and apple into smaller pieces and add them a bit at a time.
